Be the bridge between the life they had and the life they deserve

Why Foster?

In San Felipe, we have more dogs in need than we have space at the rescue. By opening your home to a “guest dog,” you aren’t just giving them a bed – you are literally saving their life. You provide the space and the cuddles; we provide the medical care and work on finding their forever family.

Why Foster Care Matters

Foster families provide a vital bridge between the street and a forever home. By fostering, you address the specific needs of our most vulnerable dogs:

Growth

Giving puppies a safe, healthy place to grow until they are ready for adoption

Healing

Providing a quiet space for dogs to recover from surgery, illness, or injury.

Confidence Building

Helping timid or fearful dogs learn to trust humans and feel safe in a home environment.

Decompression

Offering a calm retreat for dogs overwhelmed by the stress of rescue life.

Capacity

Opening a spot in our rescue so we can immediately save the next dog in need.

How It Works

1. Apply: Fill out our 2-Minute Interest Form.
2. Match: We’ll suggest a dog that fits your lifestyle (big, small, puppy, or chill senior).
3. Support: We drop the dog off/or arrange pick up at SFDR with basics and are available for questions.
4. Adoption: We promote the dog for adoption. Once a family is approved, the dog moves to their forever home!

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I already have dogs?

Most of our fosters have their own pets! we will help you do a slow introduction to make sure everyone is safe and happy.

How long does it last?

It’s up to you! We need everything from "Emergency Weekend Fosters" to "Long-Term Fosters" who stay with the dog until they are adopted

What if I have to travel?

Just give us a little notice! We will find a temporary "vacation foster" to watch the dog while you are away.

What if I fall in love?

It happens! It’s called a "Foster Fail," and we LOVE them. Fosters always get the first priority to adopt their guest dog.
